Bazan Monthly - Vol. 1 (lyrics)

Postby ansible » Thu Jul 24, 2014 6:31 pm

July

Impermanent Record

I was trembling with gooseflesh
First time I prayed to speak in tongues
I saw it coming and I tried to run
But now I make it up as I go along

Do I drive around with my high beams on?
Do I ever watch the road?
I store my thoughts in other people's heads
Then I question what they know

The rain falls on the animals
The wind blows up the dirt
Climb the rock
Make a home in the cleft
Keep a record of the earth

On the crowded city sidewalk
Or in the wilderness alone
The cloud of witnesses hover above you
Like a pillar of smoke
Singing stories, whispering jokes

So the rain falls on the animals
The wind blows up the dirt
I climb the rock
I make my home in the cleft
And I keep a record of the earth

I keep a record of the earth
And I write it down for what it's worth
For what it's worth

Deny Myself

My blood is moving
Sacred as it spreads
One man's temptation
Is another's daily bread

Overlook a little sin
Or focus on the flaws
The law is for the body
Not the body for the law

In a minute I'll be swimming
In what used to come for free
But now might fetch an ounce of flesh
When it occurs to me

I could deny myself
I could deny myself
I could deny myself

But why would I deny myself?
Why would I deny myself?
Why would I deny myself?

Divine light compelled us
Last night when we were kids
But adults in the morning
Lost light is all there is

I cuckolded my brother
Cause I was bored and cause I could
I fell asleep in our lover's arms
Woke up in the woods

I could deny myself
I could deny myself
I could deny myself

But why would I deny myself?
Why would I deny myself?
Why would I deny myself?

August

Nobody's Perfect

Some folks are all blood and no guts
Some cases are open and shut
So we're broken vessels compared to what?

Never did have a lot to forgive
Finally got some meat on those ribs
Reservations now ground down to bits

Nobody's perfect, nobody's free
Nobody ever gets away with anything
You keep a secret but the shadows tell on you
You hide it under a bushel but the light comes shining through
What can you do?

So he sits waiting for Adam to call
Not a word since after the fall
Wearing clothes and having a ball with Eve

With a tendency to overreact
Now he knows he wants them both back
So he's hatching a plan of attack we'll see
Could it be that

Nobody's perfect, nobody's free
Nobody ever gets away with anything
You keep a secret but the shadows tell on you
You hide it under a bushel but the light comes shining through
What can you do?

Sparkling Water

Sparkling water
Nowhere to run
Her father's daughter
His mother's son

Food on the table
Feet on the floor
Bites on the ankle
Blood on the door

You know
I don't
You know
I don't
You know
I don't, but you do
I don't, but you do

Hard like a woman
Soft like a man
One of us wants to
The other can

Heads on our pillows
Hand over heart
I dream together
You dream apart

You know
I don't
You know
I don't
You know
I don't, but you do
I don't, but you do

I don't keep secrets
I don't want to be alone
No, I don't keep secrets
I don't want to be alone

September

With You

I might have found someone who could love me
I might have found someone true
But I turn around, my life's half over
And I'm with you
Ooooooh
I'm with you
Ooooooh

You might have found someone with better genetics
You might have found someone not so blue
You might have found someone who didn't inspire you
To be untrue
Ooooooh
To be untrue
Ooooooh

Self-loathing
Paranoia
Jet lag
Alcohol
Bad dream
Long-distance calls
Babe, I don't feel well at all
Babe, I don't feel well at all

The power's out in our first apartment
I'm on the couch worried that we're through
But when the lights come on, I'm really under the covers
And I'm with you
Oooooh
I'm with you
Oooooh

Oooooh
Oooooh

Little Landslides

I've gotta get out of my body
And into muddier streams
Remember what I was doing
And gather up firstfruits to bring

Coax it into the open
But not by smoke or drink
Little twist of the compass
Little landslide on the brink

Sit and think
And think
And think
And think
And think
And

Another young man tells his story
Before his heart is even broken one time
Like a stand-up who forgets his punchlines

So before you hand over the kingdom key
For a lifetime of free drinks
Know you'll stare at that face a long time before he winks

Stop and think
And think
And think
And think
And think
And

October

Kept Secrets

Your worried mistress thinks you need
Physical exertion and vitamin D
Misunderstanding the real enemies
Sunlight and gravity

When kept secrets flow down crooked slopes
And cut a hundred riverbeds in valley floors below
Every liar knows he'll die alone
Still you hide your hope and hedge your bets until the snow
Is white with ocean foam

Down on her hardwood bedroom floor
You pen the doctrine of preemptive war
Gladly performed for deafening applause
Then you call it sabotage

When kept secrets flow down crooked slopes
And cut a hundred riverbeds in valley floors below
Every liar knows he'll die alone
Still you hide your hope and hedge your bets until the snow
Is white with ocean foam

Ill At Ease

So your ancient poems delight
In dimensions undefined
Where at some ever future time
Every wrong will finally be made right

Well, count on me to still be ill at ease
Count on me to still be ill at ease
Lest we hear it from the rocks and the trees
Why do you still look for me
When you know where I'll be?

With all creation to rebuild
And every promise unfulfilled
You want points for right belief
And the worn-out knees in your blue jeans

Well, count on me to still be ill at ease
Count on me to still be ill at ease
Lest we hear it from the rocks and the trees
Why do you still look for me
When you know where I'll always be?

November

Disappearing Ink

I recreate in the usual way
Shut some breakers off but not the whole box
Next day I fake till the fog finally abates
Again at risk of being bored by clear thought

Am I asleep? Am I awake?
And why am I asking you?
Do I enjoy the drugs I take?
My Lord
I hope I do
I hope I do

A false binary when it's probably something in between
Pierce the yolk and watch it bleed together
The heavy things we think written in disappearing ink
They may be long gone, but not forever

Am I asleep? Am I awake?
And why am I asking you?
Do I enjoy the drugs I take?
My Lord
I hope I do
I hope I do

Trouble With Boys

All your trouble with boys
Like you're making a choice
Still, you really don't know
Why they treat you so
So bad

Your stepbrother smirks that it has
Nothing to do with your dad
And you dream that the sound of his voice
Might melt them away
Your trouble with boys

And you wonder what he would say
And would it be enough?
Either way
You are worthy of love
You are worthy of love

two very minor corrections in nobody's perfect.
other than that i think everything is accurate to the recordings.
(although i've already started changing shit live  )

Changes made! Thanks duder.

Also I really dug the couple of line changes in both August tracks that you played live on the recording I put up at http://pedrothelion.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15630. Kept the changed lyrics from that show in that thread; keep changing it up, always gets better man.

Bitch please, I edited them into the first post like seven hours before you posted this. :P

And yes, steely and I are arguing. Privately. Seems impolite to do it out in the open. ;)

three minor changes.
i almost didn't mark them red cause that's kind of harsh but kept it cause it's also super funny to me.
thank you for doing this!
i'm gonna cut and paste this shit onto the youtube versions of these songs.

Yeah I was listening earlier yesterday and I heard "bad dream" without the plural pretty distinctly. I'm pretty obsessive about lyrics (as steelopus commented on my thesis over these discrepancies yesterday), so I totally love doing this and if you manage to stop by now and again to correct me, that would be super awesome.

ALSO DAVE. I see that steelopus has engaged you directly on twitter about "really" and "he winks" and we both lost the first battle (I swear I hear "nearly") but he wins the second. HOWEVER, is the line in the final chorus of Little Landslides definitely "stopping think"? I've been fighting for this one pretty hard for a couple of reasons and since you didn't correct it...I'm counting that one a victory.

Also - mark it red, Dude. Next track. ;)

While we're making corrections it seems y'all are all wrong about the title of September side B. "Little Landslides" is incorrect.

It's actually titled "Muddier Streams" to create a juxtaposition effect with August's side B brother: "Sparkling Water"

*The above may not be true, or even an original thought.
