as long as we're making doomsday predictions for american dominance, it's worth noting that one of the sketchiest things going on is rarely pointed out: the US is issuing massive, massive numbers of bonds to finance the debt, which are being bought up primarily by the chinese, who at the current pace will effectively own the country in 10-15 years.
I'm just one too many mornings and a thousand miles behind.

The US has issued massive numbers of bonds for over 200 years to finance the national debt. The Chinese and Japanese Central banks own the largest portion of US debt, but the problem is not that they buy US treasuries, the real problem would be if they stopped buying them.

The US national debt is the largest only in raw numbers because of the size of the US economy. If you look at the national debt as a % of GDP, it is around 66%, which is about average for most industrialized nations. A few countries with a higher debt-to-GDP percentage are France, Germany, Canada, India, Israel, Italy, Greece, and Japan.

Im not saying that US debt is not a big problem, it really is, but it should be put in context.

From The Onion's A.V. Club SXSW review:
3:40 p.m.: Back at the Flameshovel party, Headphones—the newish project of Pedro The Lion's David Bazan—battles a mic stand that won't stay up. He prefaces a song with a bit of history about how the Romans privatized their army just before the empire fell. "I pray America crumbles soon," he says. Umm…

Criminals are the people we punish for being a nuisance; artists are the people we reward for being a nuisance; successful businessmen are criminals disguised as artists.
