Audio - Houston, TX - 2014/07/11

Postby ansible » Thu Jul 24, 2014 6:34 pm

Back again, but in a more timely fashion - and with new tunes. I asked Dave if it was alright if I posted this here and he said it was fine. I recorded this with my phone this time; the quality is better, at least, it recorded straight to .wav at 44.1 kHz. There is a dip in the first track where I moved the phone, apologies. Anyone who wants to tweak or master the original .wavs is free to. I've been listening to the new songs for...well, since the show. On to business.

Another fine photo from...last year. He took his jacket off this time.

New songs in []. I asked Dave about the first song and he said he was probably calling it "Nobody's Perfect." The other track he said he wasn't sure what he was going to call it yet, so I just asked if I could call it Sparkling Water when I posted this, and he laughed and said no problem. I'm sure it will change but the opening lines struck me so hard. In fact, Sparkling Water (or whatever it's really called) is like...the best fucking song. I can't believe it. Out of all four new tunes from Bazan Monthly, it is my favorite. It blows me away. I can't stop listening to it or playing it on the piano. The melody of his voice on the bridge outro just breaks my heart. And God, the lyrics. Maybe it's just temporary obsession, but I don't care, it's amazing.

All four of the new tracks were just awesome this show. I asked him about Deny Myself and holding back the second half of the chorus till the end of the song, and he said he felt there was more tension to the song live that way, which I totally agree with.

Anyway. More comments later. Enjoy for now.

Yeah man, cheers and gratitude to you for posting both of these shows. Really cool of you.

Finally got around to listening to this. Really great show! Thanks for capturing this for us.

The new songs are pretty great. I am still digesting them, but as Sherpa has pointed out these really sound like the Dave I have been waiting for.

Cheers.

Yes! This was another great show. I may be a homer, but I've been to a lot of house shows in a lot of different areas and the one's at Ansible's place are the best.

Dave is on his A game right now.

edit: Shit man, Nobody's Perfect is my jam

So the lyrics changed slightly from this live show to the released versions that came out today. I updated the thread on dot org and steely, I updated the page you've been keeping at http://lyrics.wikia.com/David_Bazan. Only a couple of changes, but they are interesting, so I'm going to repost the "old" lyrics from these live versions here in this thread.

Man, I realized, with Dave not touring as much and no house shows coming up in the next few months, I (well, we) are not going to get to hear the new songs live before they are released, most likely. Man...that is just a bummer to me, I love hearing both versions, hearing how the songs evolve, how the lyrics change, all of it. I'm am seriously going to be sad about not having live recordings of most of these songs before they come out in their official versions.

But, that's life. And Dave gets to spend more time at home instead of touring. So, overall, it's a win. Just one piece of his music that I will miss.

Also, I guess Sparkling Water really is called Sparkling Water now. It definitely wasn't a month ago when corey and I talked to Dave after the show.

Old lyrics from this live show:

Nobody's Perfect

Some folks are all blood and no guts
Some cases are open and shut
So it's broken vessels compared to what?

Never did have a lot to forget
Finally got some meat on the fridge
Reservations have ground down to this

Cause nobody's perfect, nobody's free
Nobody ever gets away with anything
You keep a secret but the shadows tell on you
You hide it under a bushel but the light comes shining through
What can you do?

So he sits waiting for Adam to call
Not a word since after the fall
Wearing clothes and having withdrawals with Eve

With a tendency to overreact
Now he knows he wants them both back
So he's hatching a plan of attack and you'll see
Could it be that

Nobody's perfect, nobody's free
Nobody ever gets away with anything
And you keep a secret but the shadows tell on you
You hide it under a bushel but the light comes shining through
What can you do?

Sparkling Water

Sparkling water
Nowhere to run
Her father's daughter
His mother's son

Food on the table
Feet on the floor
Bites on the ankle
Blood on the door

You know
I don't
You know
I don't
You know
I don't, but you do
I don't believe you

Hard like a woman
Soft like a man
One of us wants to
The other can

Heads on our pillow
Hand over heart
I dream together
You dream apart

You know
I don't
You know
I don't
You know
I don't, but you do
I don't believe you

I don't keep secrets
I don't want to be alone
No, I don't keep secrets
I don't want to be alone
when I was a boy
everything was right
