Record of the Earth lyrics?

I was trembling with gooseflesh
The first time I prayed to speak in tongues
I saw it coming, I tried to run
But now I make it up as I go along

I drive around with my high beams on
And never watch the road
I store my thoughts in other people's heads
Then I question what they know

The rain falls on the animals
The wind blows up the dirt
Climb the rock, make my home in the cliff
Keep a record of the earth

On the crowded city sidewalk or in the wilderness alone
The cloud of witnesses hover above you
Like a pillar of smoke
Singing stories, whispering jokes

So the rain falls on the animals
The wind blows up the dirt
I climb the rock, I make my home in the cliff
I keep a record of the earth

I keep a record of the earth
and I write it down for what it's worth

No idea what that's about, by the way. Any thoughts?

I believe it's cliff, not cleft.

Sounded like cleft when I saw him a few weeks ago. Also, this is the best song Dave's ever written. So there's that.

This is great, thank you.

I also hear "cleft" and not "cliff". "Cleft of the rock" is a common expression. As far as the meaning of the song, going to make a couple leaps --

My first impression is that it's about the Old Testament. There's some clear New Testament imagery (speaking in tongues) and current-day experience (driving), but "in the wilderness alone" (wandering in the desert for 40 years) and "cloud of witnesses hover above you / like a pillar of smoke" evoke strong imagery of the Israelites following the pillar of smoke/cloud out of Egypt.

Animals/dirt also seem to fit Old Testament imagery. Finally - "I climb the rock / I make my home in the cleft / I keep a record of the earth / I write it down for what it's worth". Exodus 33:22 - "So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by." [Emphasis mine.] This is when God hides Moses in the cleft of the mountain and passes by him. Moses is also considered to be the author of the first five books of the Bible. This seems to fit pretty cleanly with the chorus and final line.

Just my thoughts.

Following the Gastonia show, I mentioned to Dave that I thought this was one of the most imagery-rich, evocative songs he'd ever written, and that I felt like I was watching a Coen Bros adaptation of a Cormac McCarthy novel in my head as he performed it. He said that the song was "certainly haunted by The Road."

Haha, that's great. I talked to him after the Buffalo show (thanks for recording this, by the way), and asked him if the song was perhaps inspired by Blood Meridian (I had just finished reading it and was reminded of Judge Holden's notebook)... He said he hasn't read that one but the song was "haunted by Cormac McCarthy and The Road in particular".

Can I also comment on how hilarious that American flag in the window is? I'm from Canada, so maybe I'm out of touch, but the hosts of this show seemed to live in one of the most patriotic neighbourhoods I've ever visited. Pretty much every house on the street had a big American flag hanging in front of their house. Is this sort of thing normal?

Haha thanks for noticing the flag. I put some thought into that shot.

"Normal" is tough to define. American houses displaying flags skyrocketed post-9/11. It's declined a bit in the years since, but I think you'd be hard pressed to drive through any US neighborhood without seeing a bunch of flags.
