Dave in Space!

Postby Mattmon » Thu May 11, 2017 2:16 pm

Just realized Dave is playing a bike ride away from my house at Space in Evanston, IL. Anyone want a beer?

Saw Bazan last night in Evanston at a neat little venue attached to a pizza place called Space. I was excited to finally check out this venue. I joked with Bob before
The show that I wish they had played at Space one of the 5 years I lived around the corner from the venue. The band Mint Mile opened. They sounded like a twangy version of Stephan Malkmus. Overall, they were pretty good, but I'm not sure I'd see them again without Dave. Before Dave went on I briefly chatted with him and Bob and unsuccessfully tried to buy them a beer. Nice to see them as always. Funny to think how my life and there's for that matter has changed in the 15 years I've been seeing Dave live. When Dave got on stage he went straight into a pretty long monologue about how bummed he is about the current state of affairs and how the sad tunes he was about to play weren't going to make us feel any better. Other banter included Jeff Sessions basically being a KKK member, musings about listening to the White Album for the first time, Dave's excitement about playing in a band again and how Lo Tom is very bluesy, the best thing about Christian sub culture is potlucks and the worst is all the sex stuff, the best thing about secular culture is the music and the worst is not enough potlucks. Dave played an acoustic guitar and it was really fun to hear how some of these new songs may have started out.

The set was as follows:

1.Strange negotiations - alt lyrics about shootings
2. Both hands over my eyes
3. Care
4. Up all night
5. Cold beer and cigarettes
6. Please baby please
7. Disappearing ink
8. kept secrets
9. Permanent record
10. Make music
11. Inner lives
12. Ballad of Pedro y Blanco
13. Trouble with boys
14. Keep trying
15. Bands with managers

The highlight of the evening was when Dave played The Ballad of Pedro y Blanco and then went straight into trouble with boys. As an imperfect person, husband and father of a 3 year old daughter these songs hit me so hard. Glad I held it together at the show. The new Care tunes are just so genuine and heartfelt that it is hard to not have a whole bunch of feelies.

I was there, too, it was a good show, his voice sounds great. One thing you didn't mention in your rundown is that he said that next year marks the 20th anniversary of IHTFAF and he will be touring full band with some type of nod to it.

"Pedro The Lion 20" would be good branding.
