Sufjan Stevens - Carrie and Lowell

Thank cheesus he's back to writing melodical songs. This album is gorgeous and devastating (my favorite combination). I think it might be his best.

"John My Beloved", holy shit.
I'm just one too many mornings and a thousand miles behind.

"4th of July" has a melody in it that I SWEAR I've heard Tom Petty do but I can't pinpoint it. It might be my brain tricking me. To Find a Friend has some stuff that is somewhat close so that might be what I'm hearing but man, when I first heard that Sufjan melody (specifically the melody on the line "Well you do enough talk, my little hawk", etc) I immediately thought Tom Petty Wildflowers.

I listened to some of the songs. I might put this on if I was really depressed or trying to go to sleep.

Sufjan's best lyrics, IMO
"Again I stop the waterfall by just believing"

I paid a lotta $$$ to see Sufjan at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans a month or so ago.

Last time I saw Sufjan it was one of the best live shows I'd ever seen.

This time?

It was so depressing and self-indulgent I don't think I'll listen to him for a real long time. You are a performer man. We all have our sadness. Quit harshing my mellow! You aren't fuckin' Dashboard Confessional in 2001!

For about ten minutes the coda, "We're all gonna die," was repeated ad nauseum. I got up to leave and smoke.

Amen, brother. I know he has suffered a serious loss. I know. But haven't we all? Anyway, I love Sufjan no matter what, for the record. I look forward to his next record, for sure.
