I just cant imagine someone who would steal a person's CD's. I hear about it a lot though, and every time, I am dismayed. A lot of times I think about the car-keying conversation in Pulp Fiction between Lance and Vincent in terms of CD theft, I think it very accuratley would describe my emotions if someone stole my CD's:

"I just wish I caught 'em doin' it,
ya know? Oh man, I'd give anything
to catch 'em doin' it. It'a been
worth his doin' it, if I coulda
just caught 'em, you know what I
mean?"

"It's chicken shit. You don't fuck
another man's [CD's]."

I started burning copies of my favorite CDs and keeping those in my car. I would rent my clothes in anguish if I lost them.

mmmmyea...

my wife and i got married back in our hometown two months ago. on our wedding night at our hotel someone broke into my car and stole, not only all of my 150 cd's that were under the seat (including ALL of the pedro discs) but also my laptop (that i didnt even know was IN my car because one of the best men threw it in there at the last second) which had all the music i bought off Itunes two nights before for the reception as well as misc. wedding gifts.

Only time my car has ever been broken into was on that night.

my tale is worse (except i had no laptop, and no wedding night involved). my wife and i lived in an apartment in a very nice part of town (God totally hooked us up with an amazing deal), and it had a gated parking garage. i had always kept my cd's in my car for years. well, after 8 or so years of collecting cd's, i had 300 or more. i had a huge case. and i decided that i should just burn copies of all of them and keep them in the car instead. so i bought a cd burner. and then we ordered a computer. so the computer is arriving on monday, and the cd burning will commence. saturday morning, my wife goes down to the car to leave, and she walks around the corner in the parking garage, and there is our el camino....running. just sitting there running. no one in it. she turns around runs upstairs and wakes me up, freaked out, and i'm just like "aw crap". no broken glass. the doors are locked. the car's running, and the cd case is gone. so i unlock it and get in, and it's hot as hell, so it's been sitting there running for a long time. the steering column is ripped open, and the key slot for the ignition is trashed, so i can't shut it off. the stereo/cd player is not touched and the glove box also isn't touched. i decide to drive to the mechanic so they can fix it, i put it in reverse, and start to back out, and i go to turn the wheel, and it's totally locked. the idiot did such a piss-poor hack job of ripping into my steering column that he sheared a steel plate that's in there and locked the steering. idiot. so anyways. towed the car and got it fixed.

the worst part is that first of all, a day or two later, my cd's were going to be in my house, and not in the car. so that sucks!! i get my computer and burner set up, but no cd's to burn. and second, i had a lot of hard to find cd's. all sorts of radiohead singles and imports that i had tracked down over the years, including one that i bouht while i was in japan. william shatners, the transformed man. cost me over $30. everything that pedro, starflyer, joy electric, radiohead, moby, death cab, u2, sunny day real estate, bill cosby, smashing pumpkins, red stars theory had put out, i had owned. a bunch of soundtracks, and a ton of xmas cd's. over three-fricking-hundred! i was devastated. so i got to start all over again. i'm back again, and now over 400. but there were some that were so hard to find now. starflyer's plugged. radiohead's high & dry dutch live package. i couldn't find it. but one place in europe said they may get more, but it would be $40 if they did. i also still have not found radiohead's live from planet earth. anyone out there have it? i ended up buying, on ebay, about two or three times the number of cd's to get the same number of songs that i had previously had (this is mostly for radiohead). one single would have the same first three songs, but the fourth was different from one edtion to the next, so i had to buy both. i did find a two disk set that has basically everything they've released that is non-album. so that helped. but there are a few others that i can't find that have really bugged me. i had this two or three disc opera set. can't find it. some christmas ones that don't exist anymore. oh yeah! a cd with the orchestra wedding song that i wrote and was performed for our processional. that pissed me off. luckily i have a tape recording of it somewhere, but i have no way or knowledge to get it to cd.

i still feel sick whenever i think about it. when it happened, i was mad at first, but in the end, we prayed for the guy (or girl. yeah. it was probably some mean girl.) who did it. we prayed that God would actually use the situation to help them, that their life would be changed in an amazing way. that he would listen to my carmen cd, and get "Radically Saved"! oh yeah!

I prefer the term "wise man"

or smart alec. since that's my name the jokes never stop coming.

recently: dumb girl: hey! what are you doing?

me: waiting for my ride like everyone else standing here.

dumb girl: OMG you're such a smart alec...

..

...

OMG! SMART ALEC!! THAT'S YOUR NAME AND.. OMG! *tells all her friends*

but, uh, yeah. I just never use cds after they've been ripped so either I'll use a burned copy or my iPod.

my iPod actually got stolen

at Bible study.
