Re: phoenix [01.18.19]

My Phoenix ... “But now our home is burning and you don’t have a clue.” If Dave sings that about Phoenix, what will he say when we get to the Paradise album? It literally happened. That's likely to become a distinction without a difference over the next few years as basically everything west ...

Re: phoenix [01.18.19]

Today is the day we're officially allowed to say that this is the best album DB has ever made. Obviously have to spend more time with it, but it's really incredible.

Re: phoenix [01.18.19]

Hey Matt -- things are great. My wife and I had a son in the fall and it's been nonstop for a few months, but extremely happy. I've only seen the 'Yellow Bike' video, which I really liked, so I'll have to check out others. I really like all 3 songs released to date, and honestly think each one has b...

Re: phoenix [01.18.19]

New track today! "Quietest Friend" is great -- I am so excited that the songwriting has continued to interrogate and attempt to make sense of these specific experiences and particular spaces, with the reflective approach of a memoir (how did I feel then? how do I feel about it now? what ar...

That was a nice reflection. Thanks for taking the time to post it.

Re: Blanco Tour

Carrboro was great on Monday night. Dave pivoted away from the big chunks of Blanco and put together a more integrated setlist from across his catalog. Reflections: 1. Laura Gibson, whose most recent album I have spent only a little time with, was a very engaging storyteller and intimate performer. ...

Re: Blanco Pre-Order

Re-reading my last post I don't think I captured how enthusiastic I am for this record. It's truly great and clearly the product of a thoughtful track selection and ordering process.

Re: Blanco Pre-Order

And did HT convince DB to change "before he winks" to "before he blinks"? That's the myth I'm harboring deep inside so that I can feel like I've contributed to something creative for once in my life. I really like the record but I have a pretty serious case of demo-itis from the...

Re: The Last Moments of Mary Stuart

That's a great story from school, and genuinely moving. I'll dial back my own drama a couple degrees and just add that my own frustration is in not knowing that I would love being a midshipman instead of being a filmmaker. As I stare down the barrel of 40 it just seems like I should have comprehende...

Re: Volume 1&2 thoughts

I think for the moment my favorite album out of these songs is: "DEBTS" (or, "Rescission") 1. Someone Else's Bet 2. Oblivion 3. Teardrops 4. Little Landslides 5. Impermanent Record 6. Sparkling Water 7. Little Motor 8. Animals 9. Deny Myself 10. Trouble With Boys 11. Ill at Ease ...

Re: Volume 1&2 thoughts

They're great. I have been assembling playlists of some of the songs from across the two volumes in different configurations trying to work out the best single album, but I am not far enough along in my experimenting to offer any thoughtful suggestions. There's definitely a couple of distinct themes...

Re: The Last Moments of Mary Stuart

Holy crap just saw this. With regard to new material, I will say that choosing to no longer see myself as a failed musician has been very freeing, while simultaneously not having a creative project playing around in the back of my mind all the time has been extremely deflating. So I either think of ...

Re: Volume 2?

I can't believe how strong this pairing is. These two songs resonate off each other in such elegant ways that they remind me of the strongest PTL release, the Progress EP, that was similarly thematically sophisticated as a piece. These songs have such perfect symmetry. One narrator is shackled to ma...

Re: amplifier for record player

I have to say this was the most civil discussion of Sherwood in this forum's long life. Time was, a man couldn't come in here all promotional for Sherwood without a bunch of vultures picking the meat from his bones. Time was, a man had to make a series of pseudonymous avatars to come in and promote ...
